There's been a big thumbs-up from the critics for this well acted and beautifully filmed one-off period drama, starring Billie Piper. A sequel to last year's The Ruby In The Smoke, Piper returns as fearless Victorian heroine Sally Lockhart, a financial wiz and rather clever sleuth.
Based on the Philip Pullman novel, a dark and sinister plot unfolds when an elderly lady loses her money on an investment recommended by Lockhart, a conjuror is pursued by thugs, a clairvoyant sees a brutal murder in a forest and a glass coffin then whispers the name of the richest man in Europe. These seemingly unconnected events set Lockhart on the trail of an evil far more awful than she could ever imagine - the Hopkinson Self-Regulator - a super-weapon in the hands of a Scandinavian madman, Axel Bellmann.
Why did the investment crash for Lockhart's elderly client? And what links the clairvoyant's murderous vision to the rich industrialist, Bellmann? As Sally closes in on the truth it becomes devastatingly clear that her life will never be the same again...
Quality entertainment for adults and older children. Highly recommended.
