There's been strong critical acclaim for this, the start of a new 12-part series of the tough business reality show, ruled with a rod of iron by Sir Alan Sugar (pictured). It features 16 new aspiring tycoons battling it out to win a six-figure salary and a job with Sugar. The opener is described as "funny", "energetic", "great entertainment" and getting off to "a flying start".

The tasks are harder, the candidates hungrier, and the boss is tougher than ever. Multi-award-winning series The Apprentice is back.

Following the huge success of the previous three series, the show returns to challenge 16 aspiring tycoons trying their luck at securing the job of a lifetime with no-nonsense boss and self-made millionaire, Sir Alan Sugar.

In their first boardroom meeting Sir Alan Sugar makes sure the candidates understand exactly what is in store for them over the next 12 weeks. "This is a business boot camp. Mary Poppins I am not," he warns the candidates. "I'm not going to hold your hand. I'm not going to tell you what to do. You're on your own two feet."

To win, the candidates will have to prove their mettle in a series of gruelling business tasks, and Sir Alan has a surprise in store. "Business starts now," he tells them. They may be suited and booted for the boardroom, but Sir Alan wants them to get stuck in by sending them out on their first task immediately. Each team is given two vanloads of fresh fish and told to flog it all before their boardroom deadline that evening.

It's boys versus girls and each team must get straight to work as time is tight and Sir Alan wants results. The teams have to identify and price their stock and decide where and how to sell it. Chaos ensues as the teams race against the clock to avoid a showdown with the boss, Sir Alan Sugar.

At the end of their first day, one team will be declared the winners, the others losers. For the winning team there's the first chance to see their new home - a luxury converted factory with 7,000 square feet of modern living space - while the losers battle it out in the boardroom. Who will be first to hear the infamous words "you're fired"? Tune in to find out.
