A bomb goes off in the science building of a college campus, killing student Sarah Turino. The building had otherwise been empty; Sarah forgot her backpack there, and went back to get it. The FBI is called in, and Special Agent Oliver Hayes and Stark (James Woods, pictured) immediately rub each other the wrong way. A search of the building finds a note written by chemical-engineering student Michael Hackford, an angry letter about blowing things up. Michael is a loner, and his computer's browser has lots of bomb-making websites bookmarked. He is questioned, and says he's angry because he's treated like a freak and abused simply because he's quiet and likes to study.
As Mayor Delgado chews out Stark for yelling at a Federal agent, Hayes reports that several detonating caps were stolen three days ago from a construction site next to the student lot where Michael parks. The foreman says he showed Michael where the caps were stored when he asked about explosives. Hayes is now convinced that Michael acted alone, so it's Stark's case. Delgado orders Michael arrested immediately. When Danny and Isaac show up at his dorm room to arrest him, they find him hanging from a noose. They got there just in time to save him; he's rushed to the hospital.
Danny brainstorms with the others: If Michael wanted to kill people, why set a bomb to go off at night when the place is supposed to be empty? Isaac wonders if maybe the building wasn't supposed to be empty. Isaac and Raina interview a TA in the chemistry department, who says the only person who was regularly in the building at night was Joe Crawford: another TA who used to meet his girlfriend there after hours.
Raina and Danny interview Joe Crawford and his girlfriend Jaime, who say their trysts were secret: Joe's still married, though he's separated. Jaime says her ex-boyfriend, Kyle Deering, has been harassing her since he found out she was seeing Joe. Isaac realizes that Kyle is the son of Craig Deering of Deering Development, which owns the construction site the detonation caps were stolen from.
