Paramedics do what doctors do - only at 60 miles an hour: that's the stuff of life for the heroes (and anti-heroes) of Saved, the compelling medical drama series that starts a re-run on the Hallmark Channel this month.
Mixing the dark humour and rapid-fire crises of E.R. with the slick style of C.S.I., Saved takes place on the mean streets of Portland, Oregon and revolves around the exploits of a group of paramedics and the patients they encounter.
Each episode of Saved focuses on an individual patient, examining their interaction with the paramedics who care for them and showing in flashback certain crucial events from the patients' lives that might have a bearing on their current predicament. This is all embellished by a soundtrack featuring the likes of Snow Patrol, Gomez, Lou Reed and Foo Fighters - not to mention class acts like Bach and Handel.
Heading the cast of Saved is Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do, The Boiler Room) as troubled paramedic Wyatt Cole, (pictured right). But the stresses and strains of Wyatt's job are the least of his problems. In fact, Wyatt finds the adrenaline rush and breakneck pace of his 24-hour-shift lifestyle a welcome escape from his inner demons, because as well as having a demanding job he's a gambling addict and he's pining for ex-love Alice, 'the one who got away'. There's also his high achieving doctor dad, Leon Cole (David Clennon, The Agency), who's a top surgeon at the hospital and is always on his son's case.
Wyatt isn't the only paramedic with problems. His partner, John 'Sack' Hallon (Omari Hardwick, Gridiron Gang), bears his own scars as evidenced by an ex-wife who hardly talks to him and a young son he hardly knows. Then there's Alice Alden (Elizabeth Reaser, The Believer), an ER medic and Wyatt's 'ex'. Technically, she and Wyatt have split up, but there's still a dangerous chemistry between them. Other members of the Saved team are Angela de la Cruz (Tracy Vilar, Good Morning, Miami) and Harper Sins (Michael McMillian, What I Like about You).
