Top-notch, magical musical, starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin. They play Gabey, Chip and Ozzie, three US Navy sailors with just 24 hours in New York and a mission - to find a date. Cue sassy taxi driver Brunhilde (Betty Garrett), pin-up Ivy (Vera-Ellen) and glamorous museum scientist Claire (Ann Miller), who variously become their objects of desire. Directed by Stanley Donen and Kelly, this Oscar-winning musical is packed with songs from Leonard Bernstein's sumptuous score including, of course, the classic New York, New York.
Did you know? Robert Williams, who plays the police sergeant in Car 44, also played the policeman who chases Gene Kelly off the street at the end of the title number in Singin' in the Rain (1952).
