After weeks of dithering - as eternally single Alice (Tamsin Greig, pictured) searches for true love - we reach the series finale of the lengthy comedy-drama.
Don't expect many laughs here; in fact, it's all rather muted and often very sombre as it becomes clear that Douglas (who has left for Italy to work on his film script with comedian Marty Cady) is making no effort to contact Alice. Has the inevitable happened? Judging by the looks Douglas was giving Marty's wife Denise the other week, it's more than likely.
Foolishly Alice calls Lloyd (Owen Brenman), Douglas's producer, to see if he's heard from him. Bad mistake. Lloyd's wife has left him because of his recent affair, and he's extremely depressed, to say the least. Not only that, but he could be taking a shine to Alice...
Elsewhere, Alice's flatmate Fae (Amelia Curtis) is fuming about her middle-aged neighbour's recent marriage to an attractive young brunette who happens to be a paraplegic, while Alice's batty colleagues at work - Cleo (Sheridan Smith) and Milly (Montserrat Lombard) - are rather taken by two young interior decorators. All this leaves Alice seriously pondering her life. She's pondering things so much that she has an eerie, out-of-body experience, linked to Gil, the American comedy writer (author of Love Soup) who she never met.
If you've stuck with the show all the way, this is an important episode. For those with half an eye on events, it's an odd, somewhat uncomfortable and frustrating end to an often patchy series. Paul Strange

Many thanks
