This often patchy sitcom, starring Tamsin Greig (pictured) as perpetually single Alice, is getting near the end of its lengthy run and desperately needs a hefty kick up the rear. Fortunately it gets that tonight, courtesy of Mackenzie Crook as barking actor Marty Cady, who's impressed with a rom-com script penned by Douglas McVitie (Alice's on-off boyfriend, played by Mark Heap).
Crook is on blistering form as unpredictable, completely out-to-lunch Cady, who wants to develop Douglas's script in ways that the writer never envisaged. Probably the most memorable guest performance of the run so far, Crook brings a lot of bite into what has been, at times, a bit of a dull affair.
Elsewhere, Alice finds that her new flatmate Fae Madison (Amelia Curtis) has some less than endearing ways as she dispenses some rough justice on the woman who stole her last boyfriend. It all culminates with an exceedingly difficult dinner round at Fae's flat.
All in all a much better episode, although the addition of armless TV executive Maxine Newman (Helen Lederer) is exceptionally tasteless. Seemingly brought in for cheap laughs, it lowers the tone considerably and doesn't work.
And if they're thinking of bringing Love Soup back for a third series, they'd be better off spinning out Crook's character for a series of his own; there's considerable mileage there. Paul Strange

Many thanks
