Jane Fonda deservedly won an Oscar for her portrayal of neurotic call girl Bree Daniels, stalked by a homicidal maniac, in Alan J Pakula's potent 1971 adult thriller. Donald Sutherland is excellent, too, as melancholic small-town cop John Klute, delving into the disappearance of a friend and uncovering considerably more than he bargained for. Combined with Pakula's atmospheric directing, the film has tremendous attention to detail and powerful moments of suspense. Paul Strange
Did you know? To prepare for her role, Jane Fonda apparently hung out with call girls and pimps for a week. When none of the pimps offered to "represent" her, Fonda became convinced she wasn't desirable enough to play a prostitute and urged the director to replace her with her friend Faye Dunaway.
