It's back! After weeks of tantalising teasers, the television event of the summer is finally here. Arriving in a flurry of foam fingers and spandex, Gladiators is about to storm onto screens for its sensational second-coming.
The TV phenomenon of the 90s made its mark thanks to the rousing renditions of Queen, the horrendous hairdos and the alarmingly tight costumes. And now Gladiators stomps into the 21st century with its helmeted head held high, as Sky One gives the iconic show a transformation on a truly epic scale and waves in a new generation of Gladiators: Battleaxe, Enigma, Ice, Inferno, Panther, Tempest, Atlas, Destroyer, Oblivion, Predator, Spartan and Tornado.
Titans among mere mortals, the hunks and hotties are determined to crush the Contenders and trample on them like weeds. The question is, will they live up to their big talk? As well as giving original events such as Hang Tough and Duel a facelift, the resurrected Gladiators will up the ante with new event Earthquake, a game designed to test the body to its limits. And, of course, if the Contenders want to taste success, they must overcome the Eliminator.
To describe it as gruelling would be a gross understatement. With fire and water added to the mix and a Travelator as steep as Everest, conquering the final obstacle will be no easy feat. On top of all this, Ian Wright and Kirsty Gallacher fulfil presenting duties, armed with an ego-puncturing dig or two for the more tantrum-prone Gladiators.
And saving the best until last, the legendary John Anderson makes a welcome return. Whistle in hand, he will once again lend his decibel-shattering, not so dulcet tones to the colossal proceedings. The embodiment of what primetime entertainment is about, Gladiators is guaranteed to leave its rivals biting the dust.
