TV adverts - especially those from around the world - make a reasonable basis for a satirical programme. It's hardly a new idea, of course; we've seen this sort of clips show before, most notably presented by Clive James and Chris Tarrant in the 1980s, Here the format is resurrected, fronted by comedian Jimmy Carr (pictured). He does a reasonable job, too, although the audience seem overly (and suspiciously) buoyed up for the laughs on offer.
The ads are grouped by genre, including That's Gotta Hurt (showcasing the sadistic lengths to which some ad execs will go to make a sale), a look back at classic ads and public safety ads (such as Jon Pertwee's ludicrous and hilarious Splink slogan to teach children the Green Cross Code). Highlights tonight include John Cleese attempting to talk enthusiastically about pretzels and a surprising big "aah" moment during an ad for a 4x4. But best of all is the government's attempts from the early 70s to stop children being trapped in a dumped fridge. Smash the door off the appliance when you get rid of it was the no-nonsense advice; never mind about CFCs and the danger to the ozone layer...
