On 2 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit the isolated nation of Burma. One of the largest and most devastating cyclones ever recorded, Nargis pummelled Burma's low-lying delta region, home to nearly six million people and producer of 60 per cent of Burma's rice crop.
It was the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of the country. So far at least 130,000 people are known to have died but thousands more are still missing. The final death toll may be more than a million.
