Steven Spielberg's sci-fi fantasy drama is a futuristic version of the fairy tale Pinocchio. Bleak but impressive, it's based on a short story by acclaimed sci-fi writer Brian Aldiss.
Set in the future, David (Haley Joel Osment, pictured, centre) is a highly advanced robotic child who longs to become a real boy so he can win back the love of his adoptive mother who abandoned him. Accompanied by guide and protector Gigolo Joe (Jude Law, pictured, left), David journeys through a violent, dystopian world in a quest for the Blue Fairy who has the power to make his dream come true.
Did you know?Stanley Kubrick began development for this film in the early 1970s, but the production was postponed as the director felt that CGI was not advanced enough to portray the David character. In 1995 Kubrick gave the project to Spielberg, who decided to use Haley Joel Osment in the lead role. Released in 2001, the film won two Oscar nominations.
