Almost Human, with Jane Goodall, explores the fascinating lives of chimpanzees in the heart of the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, the site of Jane Goodhall's groundbreaking chimpanzee research. Viewers meet an array of chimpanzee's whose extraordinary human like behaviour is observed by the experts.
The film follows Dr. Goodall and Jane Good Institute (JGI) videographer Bill Wallauer as they go in search of Gaia, a chimpanzee mother who disappeared after the death of her second offspring. They believe she was suffering from depression. As Almost Human unfolds, viewers meet other chimpanzees at Gombe National Park who demonstrate incredible human emotions such as joy, happiness, maternal love and grief.
Much of the film's never-before-seen footage comes from the JGI's rich media library, including chimpanzees crafting tools to fish for termites, temper tantrums of sibling rivalry and tender moments between mother and child. This intriguing one-off documentary highlights the many ways in which these creatures are so similar to the human race. The future of wild chimpanzees is uncertain and the message is clear that it is up to us, as humans, to ensure their survival.
