Sally Potter's film sees Joan Allen as the bored wife of British politician Sam Neill. At a dinner party, she meets Simon Akbarian, a Lebanese exile who, a professional in his own land, works in London as a cook. Fascinated by him, the two start a torrid affair but their cultural and political differences begin to drive a wedge into their happiness.
