Programme Information

This 1993 film is the true life story of Anna Mae aka Tina Turner (Angela Bassett) from her violent and destructive relationship with Ike Turner (Laurence Fishburne) to her successful career as a solo singer.

The film opens with young Anna Mae Bullock (Rae'ven Kelly) being ejected from the local church's gospel choir when she opens her mouth and lets rip with a jazzed up, raucous version of This Little Light Of Mine. When Anna Mae is seen again, she's older and has been moved by her mother to live with her older sister. Everything changes when they go to a club to see the Ike Turner Review. Part of Ike Turner's stage act is to take a woman up from the audience and let her sing with him. He does this with a couple of audience members, but when he comes to Tina, she belts out part of Do You Know I Love You and the scene is set for the growth of a powerful and ultimately destructive relationship.
