35-year-old Rhoda Bradley is a working-class mum with a dead-end job in a supermarket. Desperate to escape and find fulfillment, she decides to apply to medical school. A busy mother of three, Rhoda is frustrated by her job as a supermarket check-out assistant. Desperate for a change Rhoda has applied for promotion to the assistant manager's job. But when she sees Mandy, a shapely, younger candidate, her hopes are dashed.
