Programme Information

While considering a marriage proposal from an aristocrat, an impoverished widow on holiday in Italy in 1938 has a one-night stand that ends in tragedy. Reluctant to marry a man she does not love but concerned for her financial wellbeing, she agrees to think about wedding her admirer. But she when she is drawn to and rejected by a cocky American, she ends up in the arms of a violinist - a match that leads to disaster.
