This brutal sci-fi action thriller set in 2084, based on a Philip K. Dick short story.
Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is an Earthbound construction worker who leads an average and ordinary life although he dreams of visiting Mars - a planet he has never visited - on a regular basis.
Determined to find the meaning of these dreams he visits Rekall Inc - a corporate specialist in memory implants - in order to buy a memory trip to Mars.
However, when this implant goes terribly wrong he finds that another personality comes to the forefront. Now he finds himself remembering being a secret agent fighting against the evil Mars administrator Vilos Coohaagen (Ronny Cox).
When his old, and true, self returns, he discovers that groups of his friends and several strangers appear to have orders to kill him.
He finds records his other self left him that tell him to get to Mars to join up with the underground.
The reality of the situation is constantly in question. Who is he? Which personality is correct? Which version of reality is true?
