Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) lives on a small Kansas farm with her Auntie Em (Clara Blandick) and Uncle Henry (Charley Grapewin).
She very much loves her small holding upbringing and is extremely friendly with her family's helpers, Hickory Twicker (Jack Haley), Zeke (Bert Lahr) & Hunk Andrews (Ray Bolger). However there is one woman who Dorothy could do without and that is her nasty neighbour Miss Almira Gulch (Margaret Hamilton) who is constantly wanting to kidnap Dorothy's dog, Toto and put him down.
To prevent this from happening Dorothy runs away with Toto but the pair get sucked up into a Tornado where they travel to the magical and mystical world of Oz.
Landing in Munchkin land (a land of little people) Dorothy is greeted with exaltation as she discovers her house has landed on the wicked witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton).
Wishing to return to her loving home, Dorothy sets off through the kingdom to find the City iof Oz where the great wizard should be able to aid her on her way.
On her journey she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) who joins Dorothy as he wants to ask the wizard for a brain. The cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who wants some courage and finally the Tin Wood Man (Jack Haley) who wants a heart.
They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them, before the Wicked Witch of the East catches up with them to avenge her evil sister's death.
