This family based US drama was first screened in 1972 and ran until 1981. It is based on the true life stories of the Hamner family.
'The Waltons' follows the lives of 3, then later 4, generations of the Walton family who live in a white wooden house on Walton's Mountain, situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia during the Great Depression.
The Walton family are John Sr (Ralph Waite), Olivia (Michael Learned), Grandpa Zeb (Will Geer), Grandma Esther (Ellen Corby), John Boy (Richard Thomas, Robert Wightman), Mary Ellen (Judy Norton-Taylor), Jim-Bob (David W. Harper), Jason (Jon Walmsley), Erin (Mary Beth McDonough), Ben (Eric Scott) and Elizabeth (Kami Cotler). The family makes its small income from its, family owned and run, saw mill.
The story is told through the eyes of the eldest son of John and Olivia, John Boy who is an aspiring novelist and goes to college, and eventually fulfills his dream. He narrates the day to day stories that his family and freiends get involved in.
The saga follows the family through depression and war, and through growing up, school, courtship, marriage, employment, birth, aging, illness and death.
