Directed by Peter Weir (Dead Poet's Society, Fearless) and starring Jim Carrey (The Mask, Ace Ventura) this film has been a huge success all around the world! The screenplay written by Andrew Niccol (Gatacca) was one of the most original stories, and with an amazing cast a wonderful film!
The film is based around Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) and set 10 years in the future. We follow the film from twenty nine years later, but find out how the Omnicam Corporation set out on a unique televisual experiment - to film one person's life from birth to death.
At his birth, millions around the world tuned in and since then he has been filmed in a small town called Sea Haven. The programme becomes by far the most successful television show of all time. Everybody knows the Truman Show, apart from its hero. Truman Burbank is completely oblivious to his fame.
His Creator Christof (Ed Harris), who watches his every move, controls Truman's life. Christof's character is cleverly constructed by Weir to contain many qualities not stereotyping him to your common villain. He contains some pleasant characteristics like his paternal instinct towards Truman showing his more caring side. The whole film is very cleverly constructed to play on societies fears about media control.
The film contains conventional themes of good verses bad and has a strong romantic feel. The resolution is satisfying, but leaves you still thinking of the themes the film highlights.
It has many appealing aspects, especially the famous humour of Hollywood star Jim Carrey!!!
