Programme Information

David Lynch's Oscar-nominated FilmFour-funded film, based on a true story, stars the late Richard Farnsworth as Alvin Straight. Alvin learns his brother is dying and wants to see him one more time. But he can't afford the air fare and doesn't have a car. What he does have is a tractor-mower that he decides to drive the 300 miles to Wisconsin. The film documents his painfully slow progress, the people he meets and the adventures he has, but does so with loving care, leisurely bringing out Alvin's character, showing how he too brings out the best in those he meets. Unique, superlative film making, stunningly shot by Freddie Francis.
