Brian Helgeland's religious thriller stars Heath Ledger as Alex Bernier, a young Catholic priest who adheres to a rare form of the faith. When he learns of the strange death of his mentor, he travels to Rome with his fellow priest Thomas Garrett and savant Mara Sinclair - a woman who once tried to kill him during an exorcism - to investigate the mystery. What he finds is the truth behind the myth of the Sin Eater, an immortal figure who takes on the sins of the damned to ensure their passage into Heaven. But with immortality comes both spiritual and temporal corruption, as Bernier battles both the church and demons to uncover the secrets of the Sin Eater. The film reunited the director with the stars of his film A Knight's Tale and also stars Benno Fürmann and Peter Weller.
