Law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) writes a brief about the assassination of two Supreme Court justices. However this brief finds its way into the very wrong hands and now her life is at risk.

She turns to Washington newspaper reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington) for help, and as he learns her story, an incredible conspiracy unfolds
