Programme Information

Cuba Gooding Jr plays a New York executive down on his luck who finds out he's been left $150,000 by his aunt Sally. Returning to his hometown in Georgia, he discovers there's a catch - he has to create a gospel choir capable of winning the Gospel Explosion competition. Recruiting the town's one decent singer, he assembles a mish-mash of singers, including local convicts, and sets about getting them into shape. The conclusion of Jonathan Lynn's film is never in any doubt but Gooding Jr's role as the sophisticated fish-out-of-water executive is played with panache and the musical numbers punctuating the film are performed with suitable gusto.
