When an American nuclear submarine, the USS Montana, is attacked and sunk during the cold-war, the American government believe the Russian military were to be held responsible, but must find the sub to ascertain the reasoning for its fate.
When the US government realise that the submarine is settled in an abyss to which it is almost impossible to reach they employ the only people qualified to find the vessel at that depth, a team of underwater drilling platform workers who will work alongside the Navy S.E.A.L.s to locate the site, however this partnership isn't perfect and as the teams get closer to their destination friction increases.
Soon however some of the workers start reporting that they have seen underwater 'U.F.Os', this alerts the military to the possibility that Russian mini-subs are in the area. After a series of near fatal accidents the rig workers discover that they are the only people who can stop World War 3 from starting between the U.S.S.R and U.S.A.
However they all soon learn that there is something else besides the submarine in the Abyss, and strange things are happening on the ocean surface...
