The time is the 2373 and the ship is the newly commissioned Enterprise-E.
Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), the captain and crew of the Enterprise-E have been ordered not to interfere in a combat between a Borg Cube and ships from the Federation.
However, seeing the Federation in sever trouble, and about to lose their battle, Picard ignores these orders and takes command of the defending fleet anyway.
With the knowledge he holds about the weaknesses of the Cube, the Enterprise and its crew destroy it.
However, a small piece of the Cube escapes and has now plotted a deadly course to Earth.
The Enterprise must now try and stop this awful collision from happening and chase it, however things go awry when the Enterprise enters a time distortion vortex which has been created by the Borg, a deadly race of cybernetically enhanced beings.
The crew now find themselves lost in the middle of the 21st century. Their only chance of stopping the Borg from assimilating Earth is to help Dr. Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell), the inventor of the warp drive, make sure he makes his famous first warp flight.
