Programme Information

Helen Quilley (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a young woman whose life literally takes two separate directions one day when she gets the sack from her job in a PR company and, leaving work early, when the sliding doors of the tube car close on her, we start to see what would have happened if she'd made the train, and if she hadn't

Having missed the train, she gets mugged, goes to hospital and eventually arrives home to find her boyfriend Gerry (John Lynch) alone in the shower unaware that he is having an affair with his ex-girlfriend Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). However, in her parallel life, when she catches the train, she meets a charming stranger on the train, James Hammerton (John Hannah) and, due to her arriving home early, walks in on her boyfriend while his other girlfriend is still in the house.

The two stories develop in tandem throughout this brilliant film in one story Helen leaves Gerry and forms a happy, new, loving relationship with James; in the other Helen's live becomes more and more wretched as she takes on two jobs to support her worthless, cheating boyfriend as he supposedly writes his novel but, in fact carries on a torrid affair with Lydia - but will Helen find happiness in either one of them?
