Christophe Gans's stylish horror film, based on the classic video game of the same name, stars Radha Mitchell as Rose Da Silva, whose young daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland, pictured) keeps having nightmares about Silent Hill. Rosa decides to take her to the West Virginia town to solve the puzzle but on the way, blacks out after a minor road accident.

Awakening, she finds her daughter disappeared into the deserted town, a place of evil that sits atop a smouldering mine, where grey ash falls, making it perpetual night and where the only inhabitants include bloodthirsty babies and zombie nurses. Not only must she avoid their murderous attentions, she must get to Sharon before they do.

Rose is not alone in her search; her husband Christopher (Sean Bean) and feisty cop Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden) are also on the trail.

Although the plot is convoluted, it is satisfyingly explained and Mitchell, who shot to fame in the equally dark horror Pitch Black, gives another convincing performance.
