High school 'popular boy', Zach Stiler (Freddy Prinze Jr.) has just been dumped by his 'Prom Queen' girlfriend, Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) for the sleaziest of TV stars, and new boy in school, Brock Hudson (Matthew Lillard).

Now Zach has taken on a bet from his best friend Dean Sampson (Paul Walker) that he can't transform the mousy and bespectacled Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) into the school's new Prom Queen.

However problems arise when Laney takes off her glasses, does her hair and dresses in half decent clothes the world can see that this seemingly impossible task turns out to be little effort at all.
