Chon Wang (Jackie Chan), is a clumsy and hapless Imperial Guard to the Emperor of China.

However, when Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu) is kidnapped from the Forbidden City, Chon feels personally responsible for the incident and and volunteers to join the guards sent to rescue the Princess.

The Princess has been taken to the United States, and in Nevada the heroes find themselves hot on the trail of the kidnappers.

However while here, Chon somehow becomes separated from the group and finds himself an unlikely partner, a small time robber with delusions of grandeur called Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson).

Together, the two forge onto one misadventure after another.
