Seminal 'blaxploitation' movie that brings Ernest Tidyman's cool, streetwise private eye John Shaft to life.
Firstly Detective John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) finds himself up against Bumpy Jonas (Moses Gunn), the leader of the Black crime mob, then against Black nationals, and finally working with both against the White Mafia after Bumpy hires him to locate his kidnapped daughter who has been taken by the White Mafia.
To rescue Bumpy's daughter, he must infiltrate the mob and cope with racial prejudice.
This film was followed by two sequels and a TV series.
