Brian Dennehy stars as Charlie Sloan, an alcoholic ex-defence lawyer who is called back into the courts at the behest of Robin Harwell, a former lover who wants him to defend her teenage daughter, who is on a double murder charge. When a media circus ensues after the prosecution labels him a drunk, Charlie wonders if he should have taken the case, but he battles his demons and sets out to prove himself to the court and to Robin.
