In a futuristic society set in 2018 there is no crime and no wars and countries have been replaced by corporations who are known as the leaders of the world, as well as the controllers of the population.

An extremely violent game enjoyed by millions, RollerBall is now the top recreational sport in the world with teams which represent various areas competing for the championship title. The game is also used as a means to control the population by demonstrating the lack of importance that individuality holds.

One particular player known as Jonathan E. (James Caan) is a ten-year veteran of the sport for the Houston team rises to the top of the league and fights for his personal freedom thus also fighting against corporate control. This doesn't impress corporate heads who wanted him to retire despite his fame and now his independence threatens to shake the corporate political structure of society.
