Darren Aronofsky's stark drama is a harsh examination of how drugs wreck lives and dreams. Ellen Burstyn is a blowsy overweight housewife, Jared Leto her son, Jennifer Connelly his girlfriend. Burstyn's dream is to appear on a TV quiz show, svelte and in a red dress, and she starts wolfing down diet pills while Leto is after the one big score that will set him up, ignoring his suppurating arm while Connelly, under his spell, begins to sell herself.
