This enthralling suspense drama brilliantly directed by the immortal Alfred Hitchcock, is filmed in 1950's New York.
When freelance photographer, L.B 'Jeff' Jefferies is injured in an horrific accident he is confined to a wheelchair and house bound until his broken legs heal properly.
Bored to tears with only the occasional distraction of a call nurse called Stella (Thelma Ritter) and his frustrated, fashion consultant, girlfriend Lisa Carol Fremont (Grace Kelly). Jeff soon becomes drawn to the only other area of interest in his apartment - the tiny courtyard visible from his rear window, and the occupants of the other apartments around his.
With the aid of a telephoto lens and binoculars, Jeff soon becomes totally immersed in the private lives and drama's of his neighbours which run before his eyes like a brilliant soap opera.
The residents include; 'Miss Lonely Hearts' (Judith Evelyn), the frustrated songwriter (Ross Bagdasarian), the sculptress whom loves to sunbathe, Miss Torso (Georgine Darcy) the ballet dancer, a newlywed couple (Rand Harper & Havis Davenport respectively) and a middle-aged couple (Frank Cady & Sara Berner) with an annoying dog whom sleep on the fire escape to evade the heat inside.
Then, of course, there is the mysterious salesman whose invalid wife has suddenly disappeared from the scene. However this disappearance has coincided with the husband's middle-of-the-night forays into the sleeping city with his sample case.
Now the questions arise; Where did she go? What's in the trunk that the salesman ships away? What's he been doing with the knives and the saw that he cleans at the kitchen sink?
A classic exploration of the theme of voyeurism.
