Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a monstrously rich executive who specialises in buying companies, breaking them up and selling the pieces at a profit.

He arrives in Los Angeles and wants sex. He picks up Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) on a street corner for an evening's entertainment. She's adamant that there will be no kissing. Otherwise, she's game for anything, particularly at his price bracket.

Vivian: "I got red, I got yellow, I got green, I got blue, I'm out of purple, but I do have one Gold Circle left. The condom of champions. Nothin' is getting through this sucker."

They get on great and he offers her more money to stay with him for a whole week. Edward has to do the LA social scene, dinners and polo matches.

Edward: "You and I are such similar creatures, Vivian. We both screw people for money."
