This is John Madden's spectacular dramatisation of one of history's most unusual, and moving love stories.

Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) is deep in grief over her husband's demise, she soon disappears from the public's view due to her feeling that she can no longer carry out her public duties.

Her servant, John Brown (Billy Connolly) is summoned to her from Balmoral. His main concern being to walk the Queen's pony, in the hope that she will start to come out of herself, and start living her life to the full once again.

The confident, and ever adoring, Highlander displays a distinct lack of respect for court protocol and quickly becomes the Queen's most trusted companion and through caress and admiration he brings her back to life once again.

However the bitterness of this sweet tale is that the relationship creates a scandalous situation and if unveiled could lead to a crisis in the monarchy.
