Programme Information

Still one of the most brilliant Disney family films ever to grace our screens. For decades now this wonderful and magical film has brightened the lives of children all over the world from all different backgrounds.

Michael (Matthew Garber) and Jane Banks (Karen Dotrice) are the children of a strict banker father (David Tomlinson) and a suffrogette mother (Glynis Johns).

They have just lost 'another' of their many nanny's due to their bad behviour and typical childlike antics and their father prepares to interview for a replacement.

The children, in a desperate attempt to have a nanny they actually want, write a letter listing all the aspects they want in their dream nanny.

However on showing their childish letter to their father he rips up the letter, throws it in the fire grate and tells the children he will pick the most appropriate nanny out of the ones he has requested to see ... all stick-in-the-muds and strict beyond belief.

However a change in the wind seems to change all of this as the letter is whisked up the chimney and later the queues of potential nannies outside the house are whisked away aswell, thus leaving only one - Mary Poppins who has arrived by the means of an umbrella.

On interviewing Mary, Mr Banks discovers she has obtained the torn letter and matches each demand 100% which he doesn't particularly like but due to the amazing disappearance of all the other potential nannies he gives her the job anyway.

Now the magic begins as the children are taken on one magical outing after another by theoir perfect nanny with the aid of the local chimney sweep, Bert (Dick Van Dyke)

The children experience adventures such as; floating around rooms due to laughing too hard and riding carousel horses through the countryside. Jumping in and out of chalk painting and visiting animated worlds of penguin waiters are just a few of their brilliant and magical outings.

As she helps them magically explore the world around them the father grows increasingly disapproving of her methods, and must eventually deal with his own distance from his children.
