Flaubert's classic has been described as the greatest novel ever written, and this star-studded feature-length adaptation certainly does the original justice. It's the tale of a provincial doctor's frustrated wife in 19th-century France, and the price she pays for her infidelities. Emma returns home after her mother's death and falls for Bovary, but is disappointed by her crushingly dull lifestyle. It will all end in tears, no doubt.
