Jim Carrey's on top form, utilising his rubbery-faced and eccentric acting style to its full potential, as he plays evil Count Olaf in this movie based on Daniel Handler's three classic children's stories. The Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, have just been orphaned. Their parents left them a fortune which they cannot touch until the eldest comes of age. Meanwhile they are to be looked after by guardians. When Count Olaf, a distant relative tries to steal their money they move in with the next family relation, but Olaf is a determined man and every time they settle down, he reappears and there's another 'unfortunate event'.
