The work of Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson is the focus of this show, which follows one case from the investigation's start to the trial's end. Detective Stabler, devoted husband and father, tries to protect his family from the harsh realities of his work. His partner, Detective Olivia Benson has risen in a career which is also her personal crusade.
Their co-workers include Detective John Munch; paranoid, fond of conspiracy theories, and known to correct grammar during interrogations. But predators underestimate him at their peril. His low-key partner, Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola, hits just the right counter-note with his sly sense of humor.
The detective's work is overseen by Captain Donald Cragen; a stern, but fair and compassionate commander. Forensic psychiatrist George Huang is on-hand, to provide insight into the minds of the accused. Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot does her utmost to prosecute each case, striving for justice amidst legal technicalities, and politics.
