When Jacqueline 'Jack' Barrett leaves her philandering fiancé and decides to start over again in New York City, she dreams of making it on her own in a meaningful career as a journalist, while reacquainting herself with her former best friend, Audrey. The one thing she doesn't want is a relationship. But then she meets handsome toy-maker, David 'Jill' Jillefsky, just as he is about to move in with his long-time girlfriend Elisa, and the worlds of Jack and Jill are changed forever. When the free-spirited Jack ends up working in Elisa's newsroom, things soon become very complicated, leaving a huge hill to climb for Jack and Jill.
