Born in 1518 within the Highlands of Scotland, Connor Macleod (Christopher Lambert) is an immortal, and the only way he can be killed is by having his head struck from his shoulders. In 1536, after facing an evil opponent, he survives a fatal stab wound and is thus banished from his village due to the villagers belief he is the devil, or in collaboration with him.
He soon meets another human who is immortal like himself, he is Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery). Ramirez teaches Macleod the art of true swordsmanship and the ways of his kind, the immortals. One rule of the immortals is that if one immortal takes the life of another, the defeated party's powers are automatically absorbed by the winner. Ramirez and Macleod become close until Ramirez is killed by Macleod's ultimate rival, Kurgan (Clancy Brown) who is also immortal but evil with it, his ultimate lust being for ultimate power of the immortals.
Macleod battles his way through the centuries until he reaches present-day New York which is the location for "The Gathering". Here Macleod must join the remaining immortals and battle each one until only one remains, that one being left with "The Prize".
