In the icy heart of snow-blanketed Minnesota, Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a hapless car salesman is so desperate for money to pay off his debts that he hatches a plan to kidnap his own wife so as to extort money out of her father.

Unfortunately, things dont go smoothly when the two thugs (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) he hires shoot both a state trooper and two innocent bystanders, drawing heavily pregnant local Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Oscar winner Frances McDormand) into her first homicide investigation.

At first unaware that the homicides are connected to a Minneapolis kidnapping, Chief Gunderson draws closer to Jerry Lundegaard as his situation further unravels.
