Martin Bryce (Richard Briars) is the ever loyal employee of Mole Valley Valves, chair person of nearly every neighbourhood club and committee - a true pillar of the local community.
His ever patient wife Ann (Penelope Wilton) stands on the side lines as Martin fusses, meddles and complains, always there to sooth him at the end of the day.
The arrival of the new neighbour Paul Ryman (Peter Egan) just adds to Martin's worries, concerns and tetchiness as Paul, the suave, understanding and effortlessly effective proprietor of a very successful beauty salon seems to be quite attracted to Ann.
Howard (Stanley Lebor) and Hilda Hughes (Geraldine Newman), the matching jumper pair, however are the understanding, dippy neighbours who like everyone.
