Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith) is a successful and gutsy labour lawyer living a relatively calm and normal life.
However this all changes when he accidentally meets an old college friend. Robert soon discovers that the friend is being pursued by government agents and slips Robert a computer disc and viewer containing footage of a political assassination overseen by the senior advisor to the National Security Agency. He is shortly after murdered.
Now Robert finds himself in a big pile of trouble as the agencies chasing his friend now start trailing him for. And it isn't long before he discovers that he has stumbled across a setup which has left him the prime suspect for a gruesome murder.
Now Dean finds himself on the run, with his assests frozen, his loved ones watched and actively hunted by NSA agents using all the survellience technology they have available.
Being shown several bugs by a trustable contact of the victim, named Brill (Gene Hackman), Robert quickly learns about the fire he is now playing with - and decides to win instead of giving up.
And the murder case of a staged suicide by a U.S. congressman may cause some heads to roll, if the disc containing the proof can be found in time and delivered to its destination.
