Lewis Gilbert's film stars Julia Walters in her film debut as the Liverpudlian housewife who's joined the Open University thirsty for knowledge and self-fulfillment, while Michael Caine plays her boozy, disillusioned lecturer. Adapted from Willy Russell's play the film won both BAFTA and Golden Globe awards as well as being Oscar nominated.
