On Christmas Eve a tough New York cop called John McClane (Bruce Willis) goes to Los Angeles to visit his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) at her company's Christmas party.

This party is taking place on the top floor of a skyscraper building in downtown LA. However, during the festivities, the building is invaded by terrorists which leaves John, who's escaped to the roof, as the other partygoers' only hope for survival.
