With little time, a team of astronauts set about saving mankind from going the way of the dinosaurs.
When Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) joined his High School's Astronomy Club more to be with the girl of his dreams, Sarah Hotchner (Leelee Sobieski) than to look into the skies he doesn't bet on seeing what is about to change the lives of everyone on the planet.
One night, a field study takes place and Leo accidentally stumbles into one spot too many in a known group of stars. The new comet is soon named Wolf-Biederman after himself and the other astronomer present.
Unfortunately though, it is racing towards earth on a direct collision course.
Meanwhile an NBC reporter called Jenny Learner (Téa Leoni), is investiogating a report made that a minister is having an affair with a woman called "Ellie".
However when she has an unscheduled and unwanted meeting with the president she discovers that Ellie isn't a woman after all - it is infact the security code given to the situation regarding the comet.
Soon, the comets existance is announced officially and panic grips the world leaving their only hope with a young team of experts, accompanied by underrated, crusty-old-timer, Spurgeon "Fish" Tanner (Robert Duvall), who's only hope is to perform what many consider to be impossible - knocking the comet off course - but is this really possible?
